Growing a business takes a lot of courage. As entrepreneurs, we make decisions every day based on incomplete information. We can’t wait to see the whole staircase before taking our next step. So, we manage uncertainty, find workarounds, and push forward with a quiet determination—even when we hit a roadblock.
If you’re like me, that means you’re always forecasting. Ever spent weeks working on a client solution or developing a new product, only to have to go back to the drawing board because something changed? Yeah, me too. I strategize with my team, present proposals to clients, and manage projects—all while knowing there are no guarantees. And yet, we keep believing.
And because no one can really tell the future, sometimes that means you get caught off guard. Here’s what I tell my coaching clients: “If you haven’t yet hit a stumbling block in your business journey, you’re probably doing it wrong. What matters is how you break through.”
When you hit those inevitable roadblocks, how do you keep moving forward? Here are three (3) suggestions for getting back on track:
- Embrace Agility – Assuming you have a plan for growth, know this: Your plan is a guide, not a rigid set of rules. If a particular strategy isn’t delivering results, it’s perfectly okay to refine your approach. In fact, I’d say agility is one of the keys to sustainability. Rather than giving up, examine what went wrong and choose another path.
- Base Your Decisions on Facts, Not Fiction – When faced with uncertainty, rely on real information. If you keep track of data points like client feedback, project timelines, or lead generation sources, take time to analyze it. Look for patterns or trends that point to a root cause and base your decisions on that. When you’re unsure of your next move, data can provide useful insights.
- Build on Your Wins – When you are in the day-to-day grind, it’s easy to overlook the good stuff. Did you just win a new client? Or work through a tough challenge? Stop and take a moment to acknowledge these wins. Seeing them as proof of your ability to make smart decisions can reinforce your confidence.
By embracing agility, grounding your decisions in data, and celebrating your wins, you’ll build the muscle you need to push through when things get tough. And guess what? These strategies aren’t just about day-to-day survival—they are a part of your toolkit for building a profitable and sustainable business, one step at a time.
One last thing . . .
Sometimes the most courageous step you can take is finding someone who can help you see things differently—so you can clear the way forward. If you’re facing critical decisions, navigating periods of rapid growth, or feeling overwhelmed by the day-to-day, consider hiring a business coach.
