3 Ways to Make Your Business Sustainable

The team at Growmetix® works with a few local government clients. So far, none have scaled back budgets for the business coaching or training programs we manage, but you can bet we’ve been watching closely as federal policy shifts influence local initiatives.  Recent executive orders have mostly targeted federal agencies and contractors, but their ripple effects could shake things up for underrepresented entrepreneurs everywhere.

In this environment, we’re doubling down on practical, real-world strategies for continued growth. And I’d encourage you to do the same.  By focusing on a few core business fundamentals, you can make sure your company not only survives, but thrives — no matter what the economy throws its way.

Let’s explore some of these fundamentals:

1. Start with a Solid Foundation

No matter who you are, what business you’re in, or what products or services you sell, growth comes down to one basic truth . . . If you offer a product or service that meets a specific need or solves a real problem, customers will buy from you. Obviously, this starts with understanding your customer. When you understand your customers “why,” you can offer solutions that resonate.

Lots of my coaching clients think they know their customers. But do you really? Are you creating and delivering solutions based on real data? When is the last time you asked what how they feel about their experiences with you?

Three (3) easy ways to get REAL feedback from your customers:

  • conduct a one question survey after key interactions
  • schedule informal feedback calls
  • ask open-ended questions during normal conversations

You’ve seen these before. You might ask simply, “Overall, how was your experience with us?” and allow for an open-ended response or let them choose from a 1-5 scale or “poor, good, or excellent” rating. Some companies follow up with, “What one (1) thing could improve your experience?”

No matter which questions you choose, listening helps you understand your customer. Getting clear on how best to serve them and adding real value could mean repeat business and referrals. Which, of course, translates into revenue. And revenue (coupled with smart money management) will help you weather the big bad wolf’s huffing and puffing every day!

2. Reinforce Your Walls

Another brick to keep your house solid when the wind blows is financial forecasting. Many of my coaching clients shy away from this because it feels overwhelming. Yet, developing robust financial forecasts and monitoring your cash flow is crucial; it helps you anticipate which way the wind might blow, allowing you to plan for the impact before the storm hits.

And it’s not as hard as you might think. Start with tracking your expenses. Once you know what you spend on a regular basis, you can compare it to expected income. This makes it much easier to spot if and when you might have a shortage.

3. Strengthen Your Structure

Once your financial walls are strong, it’s time to look inward.

Another fundamental concept that shores up your business during uncertain times is operating with a lean mindset. This isn’t just about cutting costs; it’s about systematically rooting out and eliminating waste—whether it’s wasted time, unnecessary materials, or redundant steps in your processes.

Think about how this plays out daily: If someone on your team takes longer to do something, that means they get less done overall – directly impacting the number of clients served or products delivered. Say, for instance, one person takes 2 hours to complete a work task and another takes 3 hours. In a typical workday, the first person could complete four tasks, while the second can only complete two.

That’s a huge difference!

And, if each task is billable, the efficiency gap means you’re bringing in less revenue. To fix this,  identify the most efficient way  to do the work, clearly define and document your processes, and ensure every team member follows them consistently.

Recent threats to DEI initiatives may seem scary. But by focusing on providing real solutions that solve real problems for your customer, mastering your finances and optimizing your productivity, you can build a sustainable business that stands through any storm.

These fundamentals are powerful on their own—but even more effective with the right guidance. A business coach can help you see blind spots, stay accountable, and turn strategy into results. Whether you’re navigating uncertainty or aiming for your next level of growth, you don’t have to do it alone. Book your FREE Discovery Call at www.growmetix.com/discovery-call today.
